In Rememberance of Carla Madison

Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods mourns, with all of Denver, the loss of District 8 Councilwoman Carla Madison. Carla was a huge neighborhood advocate serving on the CHUN Board in 2005 & 2006, representing City Park West where she served as their president.  She was an integral part of the CHUN Zoning and Land Use Committee and her legacy will live on in the work she did then as well as through her dedicated service with the Denver City Council.

“Carla Madison was a people's representative who really understood neighborhoods and their importance to Denver. In her work within her own City Park West neighborhood, as part of Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods and then as a city councilor, Carla never lost sight of the need to be fair and balanced in her approach to issues. She also had great personal flair and presence that will be greatly missed.” -- CHUN Board President Caroline Schomp

"Carla Madison was an exceptional City Council representative for District 8. Before she was elected to City Council in 2007, she was a very effective president of City Park West Neighborhood Association for several years and was the leading force in “right-zoning” much of that neighborhood as Overlay District 9, which inspired several other neighborhoods to make similar efforts. After she was elected, she spent much of her seemingly limitless energy on updating the entire 1956 Denver Zoning Code. She attended many CHUN committee meetings and many other neighborhood meetings before and after her election and was very effective in keeping in touch with and listening to grass-roots neighbors." -- Michael Henry, co-chair of CHUN’s Zoning Committee

"CHUN and Greater Capitol Hill lost a dear friend and champion with the passing of our beloved District 8 City Councilwoman Carla Madison April 6, 2011.  There will be many tributes coming from her legion of friends and colleagues.  To me, it was just in Carla’s nature to be so at home here in our community, for I think of Carla and Capitol Hill as metaphors for one another.  Eclectic. Colorful. Authentic. Forgiving. Caring.  There was always the light within Carla that never failed to brighten one’s day and space and time.  That will never go away.  It is her legacy." -- Dave Walstrom, immediate past president of the CHUN Board of Delegates and one of Carla’s many longtime community colleagues and friends

On behalf of current and past CHUN board members, staff, volunteers and the Capitol Hill Community, CHUN extends its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to husband Paul Weiss and to her family and friends.

Those who were touched by Councilwoman Carla Madison are invited to her 55th birthday party on Saturday, April 23.

Those who attend are encouraged to wear something orange and meet at her office at 2713 Welton St. at about 2:30 p.m., and at about 3 p.m. ride their bicycles to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd. The party starts at 4 p.m. It is the hope of her husband, Paul Weiss, that those who attend will leave aspiring to do more than they ever thought they could.

Also, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that a gift be made in Carla’s name to District 8 Senior Events (2713 Welton St., Denver, Co. 80205) so the free Ice Cream Social Festival she organized and loved can continue in her memory. The theme for the party is orange, as that was Carla’s favorite color.
